The Challenge
Humans are destroying the land and sea at an alarming rate, measured by pollution, lack of biodiversity and the rising carbon in the atmosphere. This CO2 concentration has climbed from 280 parts per million (ppm) in the year1937, to 409 parts per million in 2019 ~ source: David Attenborough - A Life on our Planet. The negative impact from this count affects global temperatures, sea levels, water acidity and fresh water aquifers on the land. Clearly, we need innovative approaches to reducing our carbon footprint, as recent estimates for the year 2100 shows a sea rise of 6 feet and land displacment for 300 Million people.
The Innovation
Mermaid Gardens are branded locations in the world"s oceans dedicated to growing seaweed, kelp and other sustainable wildlife which sequester carbon from the sea water, supplies rich food sources and offers biomass opportunities to create single-use plastic alternatives.
Recently, a marketplace has emerged to help seaweed and kelp growers benefit and profit while developing impact oriented busiensses. A powerful network of social entreprenuers in this field will creatively support a measurable change in the environment for generations to come.
The Impact
Impact... game on! Green house gasses can be contained... without which, very dangerous methane stores will be released and destroy our fragile environments. It"s time to do our part! The positive impact of growing seaweed and kelp is immeasurable to the health of humanity and at scale, can tip the balance and minimize the increased CO2 in the earth"s atmosphere.
