The Challenge

At present, all the countries of Central America import high quality cassava starch because their production cannot be carried out anywhere in the region. The production and distribution from Nicaragua reduces logistical complications for Central American companies that import high quality cassava starch, so ALHEXSA represents an open door to a new market for our country.

The Innovation

There is an estimated total of $6.7MM to be raised to increase the scale of this project.

On the Industrial side of the business: $1.9 MM for debt restructuring to better terms and $2MM for growth. On the agriculture side: $600K restructuring for working capital financing and $1.2MM for for long term debt restructuring. For the small to medium businesses: there’s an opportunity to finance approx. $1MM for farmers, currently paying over 20% interest rates.

This project is on-going and and searching for expanse funding for growth.

The Impact

Cassava is bought from over 300 families of small producers in León, equivalent to 700 hectares of plantations that benefit over 1,500 people.

Fixed price for small producers, paying almost $20 per ton above the current market price. This increase in price and productivity has, and will continue to help families to improve their financial position.

Commitment to provide small producers with technical assistance, new cassava varieties with better yields and resistant to pests, in order to increase productivity from 8.4 to 16.8 tonnes per hectare.
